New Grant Helps Launch Dairy Co-Packing for Massachusetts Farmers

Grant to kickstart value-added dairy products made with Massachusetts milk

October 2, 2023| Montpelier, VT – The Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center (NE-DBIC) announces the new Massachusetts Co-Packing Startup Grant.

This 6-month grant program will provide funds for either dairy farmers located in Massachusetts forming a new partnership with a processor co-packer or for a licensed Northeast dairy processor forming a new partnership with at least one Massachusetts dairy farmer to launch a farm-branded value-added product line.  Dairy processors may be located outside of Massachusetts.

The application period begins on October 5 and ends on November 16.  Dairy farmers or processors can apply for $15,000 to $35,000 to implement the project and launch a value-added product into the marketplace.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this new Co-Packing Grant to our dairy farmers in Massachusetts,” said MDAR Commissioner Ashley Randle. “Our dairy sector provides extensive economic and environmental benefits and further diversification in production will go a long way towards business sustainability. I’m pleased to see such great and continued support for our dairy farmers who work tirelessly to bring fresh, high-quality, and nutritious dairy products to New England residents.”

“At the NE-DBIC, we are constantly seeking new ways to support farmer resiliency. Co-packing is a great opportunity for farmers to capture more value from their milk without investing in processing facilities. The partnerships and collaborations developed through this grant program will have positive ripple effects across the Massachusetts dairy supply chain.” says Laura Ginsburg, Dairy Development and Innovation Lead at Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center.

To ensure the highest potential for success, all applicants must work with a Technical Service Provider to develop a co-packing business plan.
